Minister Vijay Tamilan Parthiban Visits Kilambakkam Terminus at Midnight, Hears Passengers’ Grievances

Chennai: Transport minister A. Vijay Tamilan Parthiban on Thursday said reserved and unreserved bus passengers, who are stranded together, causes confusion at the Kilambakkam mofussil bus terminus and arrangements would be made for their wait separately.

After inspecting the bus terminus on Wednesday midnight, he said an additional 1,075 buses are operated from the terminuses at Kilambakkam, Koyambedu and Madhavaram. When the reporters raised some of the issues during the previous DMK government, the minister said “Let us not talk about what happened in the past. Whatever had happened had happened. Whatever happens in the future should be good”.

When asked about completion of the skywalk from the railway station to the bus terminus, the minister said he would take up the issue with Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and take action. Mr Parthiban said the government had been conducting awareness programmes for the transport workers to reduce accidents. He asked people to follow the road safety rules and cooperate for the reduction of accidents. He promised to operate additional buses from various parts of Chennai to the Kilambakkam terminus.

Earlier, the minister heard the grievances of passengers who were waiting for buses. The passengers complained that there are no sufficient buses for Madurai, Tiruchi, Thoothukudi, Karaikudi, Kumbakonam, Thuraiyur and Perambalur. The passengers said they had reserved tickets but waited for a long time as the buses do not arrive on time. The minister stayed in the terminus till 2 am on Thursday till all the passengers left for their destinations. There was a huge rush in the terminus with a large number of passengers due to the Bakrid holiday, wedding days and summer vacation for school students.

Before visiting the terminus, the minister held a review meeting with transport officials. He instructed the officials to provide satisfactory services to the people who depend on government buses. The meeting discussed ways to improve the revenue of the transport department. Measures to provide clean drinking water and shelters at terminuses for the people were deliberated.

The officials also discussed measures to utilise the information technology to improve the functioning of the transport department and bus operations. The modernisation of buses, improving the quality of food at places where the buses are stopped during travel were also discussed in the meeting.
