The left-handed ace continued his sensational season by leading the Atlanta Braves to a 10-2 win over the Boston Red Sox. In his shortest outing since April 6, Sale held his former team to two runs over five innings while striking out eight.

Sale reflected on his trip back to Boston after the game, per MLB.com’s Mark Bowman.

“I definitely appreciate coming back here,” Sale said. “I still have my home here. We come up in the offseason. I enjoy the city of Boston. It was really good to me for a really long time.”

Sale recorded a 3.27 ERA in six seasons with the Red Sox, making two of his nine career All-Star appearances. He won his first Cy Young Award upon joining Atlanta in 2024.

Although there’s steep competition from several National League aces, the 37-year-old could pursue his second Cy Young amid a dominant season. Thursday snapped a streak of seven straight quality starts for Sale, who allowed six hits and three walks.

It wasn’t his sharpest outing, and Sale left a tie game before Atlanta unloaded on Boston’s bullpen for five runs in the sixth inning. Following a grand slam by Ronald Acuña Jr., Michael Harris went yard in the seventh, and Ozzie Albies delivered another insurance blast in the ninth.

Sale credited another former Red Sox player, catcher Sandy León, for helping him navigate the outing.

“I felt like I did just enough to kind of keep us in it,” Sale said. “I told (León) after that it was really impressive how he got me through it, because my slider was going the other way. My fastball command was all over the place. But he got me through it.”
