Rúben Dias has broken his silence on his split from TV star Maya Jama, and insisted that he had not been unfaithful to the Love Island presenter despite persistent rumours
Rúben Dias has insisted that he did not cheat on Maya Jama. The Love Island presenter, 31, was in a relationship with footballer Rúben, 29, for 18 months, but they are thought to have parted ways just before she left for Scotland to film Celebrity Traitors at the end of April.
Since then, rumours as to what caused their split have been rife. Now, he has taken to social media with a lengthy statement where he denies cheating on the TV star saying: “I believe Maya deserves all the respect in the world.”
He wrote on Instagram: “I feel that when my 85-year-old grandad is asking me if I’ve cheated on my girlfriend because he’s seen it repeatedly on the news, that’s where I draw the line on what’s acceptable and what’s not.
“Maya and I have always had a relationship built on mutual respect. No line was ever crossed in that regard. A lie told often enough can start to feel like the truth and for that reason I tell you that I didn’t cheat, nor did I ever have the intention or temptation to.
“I believe Maya deserves all the respect in the world.” Ruben then refused to go into specific details of the split and suggested that it was all of a private matter anyway.
He added: “The reasons why we broke up are private and belong to us and we’ve both dealt with it in a very mature way. I’ve always chosen to remain silent on these matters as my personal life is my business only. “
The star then concluded his statement by begging fans to have “respect” for both himself and Maya and insisted that infidelity is not always the reason for a split.
Whilst the pair were still together, rumours circulated that Ruben was “toe dipping” – a modern term to describe potentially flirting with others when in a monogamous relationship – on social media.
In screenshots obtained by the Sun, thought to be from March, he could be seen following and unfollowing model Catarina Duraes – he allegedly did the same to a woman named Claire from Perth last November.
While there is no suggestion that he cheated on the Celebrity Traitors star, or ever messaged the women in question, an insider claimed that his antics while still with Maya “will raise eyebrows”.
