Dutton Ranch Ep 4 Recap, Who Is Dwight? Everett’s Tragedy Revealed As Rip Faces An Unthinkable Loss

If you thought last week’s episode of Dutton Ranch was devastating, you are in for even more heartbreak, as Beth and Rip’s ranch faces an unimaginable blow. After discovering their newly purchased bull was infested with deadly Foot and Mouth Disease in Episode 3, the couple may not have expected the tragedy that lay ahead for them. 

With tensions already running high, the Yellowstone spinoff has firmly established itself as one of Taylor Sheridan’s strongest projects. And if Episode 4 is any indication, the story is only getting darker. So much has happened in just one episode that we need to talk about it (Spoiler alert)!

Beth and Rip suffer a Rancher and animal lover’s worst nightmare

Episode 4, titled Start With a Bullet, follows the immediate aftermath of the infected bull storyline of the previous episode. After veterinarian ‘Everett McKinney’ (Ed Harris) confirms that foot-and-mouth disease has spread throughout the entire herd, ‘Rip Wheeler’ (Cole Hauser) is left with no choice but to take the tough call: euthanizing every single cow on the herd to prevent further contamination. Even the cute little calf the couple brought from Montana needs to die.

What follows, however, is arguably one of the most difficult sequences in the Yellowstone universe so far. As ‘Zachariah’ (Marc Menchaca) and ‘Azul’ (J.R. Villareal) dig a massive trench for the herd of approximately 100 cows, Rip has to take up the inhumane responsibility to personally shoot the entire herd, including the calf he risked his life to save during the season premiere wildfire. We don’t know how Rip will ever recover from this tragedy.

Understandably, the scene leaves both Beth and Rip emotionally shattered, as their dream of rebuilding a successful cattle operation in Texas is wiped out overnight, and they are about to face yet another uphill battle. But the tragedy doesn’t end there. After Beth discovers that the health records for the infected bull were allegedly forged, she and Rip track down broker ‘J.R. Simon’ (Chuck McCollum). Convinced he knowingly sold them a diseased animal, Rip confronts him before setting his trailer ablaze.

Everett McKinney’s painful family secret is finally out: what’s his connection with Beulah Jackson?

Away from the fatal ranch crisis, viewers finally get a deeper look into the tragedy that Everett has been hiding. As he has an emotional conversation with ‘Beulah Jackson’ (Annette Bening), his emotional scars slowly become visible, and he seems to enjoy her company. Everett opens up about a tragedy that has clearly defined his life for years, i.e., the loss of his son, ‘Levi.’

In the emotional moment, Everett recalls an old tire swing that has been hanging in his yard for years, but he still can’t bring himself to remove it, as every crack of the rope reminds him of the child he lost. He tells Beulah:

“More than anything, I just want the ropes to rot so that I don’t have to hear it creak every time the breeze blows by. I mean, part of me still thinks it’s Levi out there. And then reality kicks in. The wound rips open again. But the guilt of cutting it down? Shit, Beulah. If we could go back … but we’ve got too many demons to ever be good for each other.”

As the confession finally gives us context about the vet’s guarded persona, it also hints that while the Jackson matriarch may share the same grief, they also have a history together. 

Who is ‘creepy’ Dwight?

One of the episode’s biggest surprises arrives when ‘Carter’ (Finn Little) skips school and crosses paths with a new character, ‘Dwight White’. Played by veteran actor Ray McKinnon, Dwight immediately becomes an unlikely mentor figure for the teenager. An ageing cowboy, Dwight spends the day feeding Carter, sharing life lessons, and encouraging the teen to embrace the rustic ranch life instead of the classroom. 

But is Dwight as harmless as he appears? Well, we get the answer soon, when, towards the end of the episode, he takes Carter to a hidden enclosure on his property and reveals a full-grown African leopard named Xena. Dwight claims he purchased the exotic animal online, but the bizarre revelation raises serious questions about his mysterious lifestyle. Could he be involved in illegal wildlife trafficking or other criminal activities? If it’s true, then Carter is headed for danger.

Could Beulah Jackson be responsible for the Duttons’ catastrophe?

Episode 4 only fuels the suspicion that Beulah Jackson might be part of the devastating FMD outbreak that destroyed Beth and Rip’s herd. While cattle broker J.R. Simon appears to be responsible for selling the infected bull, growing evidence suggests he may have been little more than a middleman. Attention is increasingly turning to Beulah and her trusted lieutenant, ‘Joaquin Reyes’ (Juan Pablo Raba), especially after the mysterious phone call featured in Episode 3. 

By the end of Start With a Bullet, Beth and Rip have lost nearly everything they worked to build in Texas. Their prized Black Angus herd is gone, and their finances are uncertain. And now, the couple is headed for an even deadlier storm.
