KURNOOL: A religious gathering ended in tragedy on Saturday after five people, including a five-year-old boy, went missing in the Tungabhadra River near Mantralayam in Kurnool district.
According to police, the victims had come together at a relative’s residence to participate in a Satyanarayana Vratam. After the ceremony concluded, a group of family members and relatives headed to the Tungabhadra River for a swim.
While entering the river, the group reportedly misjudged the water depth and was caught in strong currents. Five individuals were swept away and have remained untraceable since.
The missing persons have been identified as Satish (35) and Yuvan Chandra (5), both residents of Hyderabad, Sandhya (22) from Uravakonda, and Raghavendra (25) and Dhanu (23), both natives of Mantralayam.
Upon receiving information about the incident, police personnel and emergency response teams rushed to the spot and launched a search operation. Expert divers, along with local fishermen familiar with the river’s terrain and flow patterns, have joined the rescue efforts.
Authorities said the search operation is continuing on a war footing to locate the missing individuals. Further details are awaited.
