BHUBANESWAR: A woman was allegedly murdered by her husband in a forested area in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district, police said on Saturday.

The incident was reported from the Kankadahad area, where the woman’s body was recovered from a nearby forest following a complaint lodged by her family members.

According to police, the victim’s relatives alleged that her husband had taken her to the forest before allegedly killing her after a domestic dispute. The body bore multiple injury marks, indicating a violent assault.

After receiving information about the incident, personnel from Kankadahad Police Station rushed to the spot, recovered the body, and launched an investigation. The woman’s husband has been detained and is being questioned in connection with the case.

Police said forensic and circumstantial evidence is being examined to establish the sequence of events and determine the exact motive behind the crime.

Family members of the deceased accused the husband of subjecting her to repeated physical abuse over the years.

“When my sister was pregnant, he used to beat her. Whenever she came to our house, we noticed injuries on her body. He often prevented us from speaking to her over the phone. We still do not know what exactly led to her death,” said Minati Barua, the victim’s sister.

Investigators are also recording statements from family members, neighbours and other potential witnesses as part of the probe.

The killing has shocked residents of the area and renewed concerns over domestic violence in rural communities. Rights activists have frequently pointed to the need for early intervention and stronger support mechanisms for women facing abuse within their homes.

The local police assured that appropriate legal action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation. The body was sent for post-mortem examination, and further inquiry is underway.
