Amid the rising scrutiny surrounding the Maine Democratic Senate candidate, his wife, Amy Gertner, has publicly addressed the controversy for the first time, defending both her marriage and her husband’s character.

Amy Gertner breaks her silence about Graham Platner’s controversy

On Saturday, May 30, 2026, Amy Gertner shared an emotional video statement from Platner’s Instagram. The statement comes days after reports alleged that Platner exchanged sexually explicit messages with multiple women and maintained a Kik account. Speaking directly to supporters, Gertner expressed frustration over what she described as a growing focus on personal attacks rather than the issues at the center of Platner’s Senate campaign. She started the video, saying:

“I wanted to make a statement today in response to a couple of news articles about my marriage to Graham… If you know Graham and me personally, you know that we got married in 2023, we live in Sullivan, we have two dogs, and we love each other deeply.”

Amy went on to say that seeing the controversial reports floating around her husband’s name and their private marital issues, she feels “angry, disappointed, and frankly ashamed.” She claimed that the attention was being directed toward what she characterized as gossip rather than policy discussions involving healthcare, education, and child care.

During the video, Gertner acknowledged that the couple has faced significant personal challenges since they tied the knot in 2023, including their open struggles with infertility and the pressures of a statewide political campaign. She revealed that despite all the controversies, she and Platner have been actively working on making their marriage work, even when it’s difficult. Amy continued:

“Marriage is hard. Being newly married is hard. Being newly married while going through infertility is hard. Being newly married, facing infertility, and navigating a Senate campaign is even harder… we work on it every day. We have support from our marriage counselor, my personal counselor, and Graham’s personal counselor. We take our mental health seriously, and we work on it every day.”

Despite everything, Amy Gertner wants to stay married to Graham Platner

Amy candidly acknowledged that her marriage has been challenging and sometimes even too difficult. Addressing speculation about the state of their relationship, Gertner went on to praise her husband, describing him as “wonderful, dynamic, and incredibly intelligent,” while highlighting his military service and years of therapy following combat deployments. Gertner said:

“The man I married is wonderful, dynamic, and incredibly intelligent. He has also lived through an immense amount of violent combat and has spent years in therapy. I admire him deeply. That’s why stories about our marriage are especially painful.”

Throughout the statement, the Maine candidate’s wife kept arguing that voters are more concerned about everyday issues than campaign controversies. Highlighting concerns of healthcare affordability, education, child care, and the rising cost of living, Gertner pushed back against what she described as politically motivated attacks on her husband. She concluded her statement by saying:

“He doesn’t have some hidden agenda. He’s trying to serve the people of Maine and make their lives better. Graham and I care deeply about the state of Maine. We love it. We were born and raised here, and I believe Mainers deserve better.”
