Just three days after the end of the regular season, the playoffs in the Italian League got underway. The series is played in a best-of-three format.
The top three teams in the regular season, Pro Recco, Brescia and Savona, all recorded comfortable victories in the first games of the quarterfinals. The duel between Posillipo and Trieste, the clubs that finished 4th and 5th in the regular season, was a close contest.
Posillipo edged Trieste 11:10 in Naples. The lead changed hands several times during the match. Trieste had a 5:4 advantage at the first break. Posillipo was in front – 7:6 at halftime. The hosts entered the final period with a slim 9:8 advantage. Early in the fourth quarter, Trieste leveled at 9:9. Mattiello and Bertoli scored decisive goals in the 30th and 31st minute, giving Posillipo a 11:9 lead. Trieste’s Pietro Faraglia just halved the deficit with 43 seconds to go.
Vincenzo Renzuto Iodice scored three goals for Posillipo, while Mezzarobba had the same output in Trieste.
Pro Recco trashed Roma Vis Nova 25:11 with four goals from Giacomo Cannella. Granados, Iocchi Gratta and Rino Buric added three each. Roma’s Jerko Penava and Jacob Mercep scored four goals each for Roma Vis Nova.
Brescia left no chance to De Akker, beating the Conference Cup champion in a 46-goal game. Ante Viskovic hit the back of the net five times to lead Brescia to a 29:17 win.. De Akker’s Erdelyi also finished with five goals.
Savona defeated Iren Genova Quinto by 10 goals, 18:8. Davide Occhione and Hungarian Oliver Leinweber were the top scorers with three goals each for Savona.
