New details surrounding the surgery that Maple Leafs veteran Max Domi underwent this offseason are raising concerns about his hockey future.
After the Leafs shockingly announced last week that Domi was going to be out indefinitely after complications from a procedure, the Toronto Sun reported Sunday that something with the surgery “went terribly wrong.”
Simmons reported that Domi could not walk following the surgery, which “created significant alarm” and that the forward’s “status remains in doubt for the coming season.”
The report also noted that Domi chose his own surgeon to handle the procedure instead of going with the one the Maple Leafs wanted to use.
The Leafs or Domi’s representatives have yet to comment on the new information published by the Toronto tabloid.
The Maple Leafs announced on May 25 that Domi underwent surgery to address an “issue he played through during the 2025-26 season,” though they did not specify what the ailment was.
The Toronto Sun reported that it was a back injury.
In the statement, the team said, “Domi will continue working with the club’s medical staff and will be re-evaluated at the start of training camp.”
Domi still has two years left on his four-year, $15 million contract he inked with the Leafs in 2024.

The forward is of course, the son of former NHL tough guy Tie Domi, who spent 12 seasons with the Maple Leafs.
Domi is coming off a 2025-26 season where he scored 12 goals and put up 36 points through 80 games with the Maple Leafs.
The Leafs missed the playoffs this and went through a big offseason of change for the organization.
The organization fired general manager Brad Treliving and then moved on from head coach Craig Berube.
They also made the controversial decision to hire John Chayka to replace Treliving as GM.
