Kuwait City: Tensions flared once again in West Asia as Kuwait’s Army on Monday announced that its air defence systems were intercepting hostile missile and drone attacks.
In a post on X, the Army said, “The Kuwaiti air defenses are currently confronting hostile missile and drone attacks.”
It added that any explosion sounds heard by residents were the result of air defence systems intercepting the incoming threats.
“Everyone is requested to adhere to the security and safety instructions issued by the competent authorities,” the statement said.
The announcement comes amid heightened regional tensions, even as the United States and Iran continue discussions on a possible peace agreement.
Kuwait’s air defences were also activated against hostile missile and drone attacks on May 28.
As the security situation in West Asia and the Gulf region remains volatile, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported that Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah held a phone conversation with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
The two leaders discussed recent regional developments and ways to strengthen regional and international security and stability.
Meanwhile, Iran has reportedly restored access to a significant portion of its underground missile infrastructure after months of excavation and repair work, according to a CNN report. The development has raised questions about the effectiveness of US efforts aimed at sealing tunnel entrances through airstrikes.
At the same time, negotiations between Washington and Tehran continue. According to CBS News, US President Donald Trump has requested further revisions to a proposed agreement designed to extend a ceasefire and reduce tensions.
Reports suggest the latest draft includes a 60-day cessation of hostilities, measures to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and a framework for renewed negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme. However, no final agreement has been announced.
A high-level White House meeting held on Friday to reach a final decision reportedly ended without a definitive outcome.
Trump reiterated that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains a key condition of any agreement.
“The one guarantee that I have to have is that there will be no nuclear weapons,” he said during an interview with Fox News.
The US President also indicated that he was in no rush to finalise a deal. According to Axios, Trump sought several changes to the draft agreement during Friday’s meeting and has since requested additional revisions.
A White House official echoed that position, saying, “President Trump will only make a deal that is good for America and satisfies his red lines.”
According to CBS News, the current proposal also addresses the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the issue of Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
