Vijayawada: The International Open Chess Tournament (FIDE Ranking) has been inaugurated by DGP Harish Gupta in Amaravati, which is organised under the aegis of VIT-AP university on Monday.
The mega tourney would be held from June 1 to 8 with an allotment of huge prize money of Rs.30 lakh.
The tourney will be held in two phases with the first phase scheduled from June 1 to 5 with Rs.15 lakh allotted as prize money. The second phase will be held from June 6 to 8 for unrated players of under 18 years of age with an allotment of Rs.15 lakh as prize money.
More than 1,000 chess players –from within the country and from overseas — arrived at the venue.
The DGP said this was the first international level tournament being held in AP’s capital city under the joint aegis of VIT-AP and Andhra Chess Association. Referring to the chief minister’s commitment to develop AP as Swarnandhra Pradesh by 2047 under the programme of ‘Viksit Bharat’, he said the international chess tourney would serve as a symbol for realising the set targets.
Praising the players, the DGP said that they looked like the future grandmasters having the capabilities to become world champions.
The DGP called for developing a strong ecosystem to promote chess in AP and noted that Amaravati was not only an administrative capital but it would also become a knowledge city for the future generations.
