Sabrina Carpenter has been given a restraining order against an alleged stalker after a series of ‘deeply alarming’ incidents left her with ‘severe and ongoing emotional distress’

Sabrina Carpenter has been granted a temporary restraining order after an alleged stalker left her in ‘significant and ongoing fear’ for her safety.

In a declaration to the court, Carpenter alleged that William Applegate appeared at her home on multiple occasions and tried to break in. She claimed he refused to leave, even when confronted by her security.

In one incident on 23 May, that she called “deeply alarming”, Carpenter alleged that Applegate managed to get to her front door by trespassing through her neighbour’s property and “forcefully pushed down” on the door handle. Upon finding it locked, he was said to have knocked, rung the doorbell and refused to leave until police arrested him.

Carpenter’s statement, obtained by Rolling Stone, read: “[Applegate] fabricated the outrageous and entirely false claim that he personally knew me and that I was expecting him. This was a complete lie.”

Applegate was booked on suspicion of a misdemeanour but released. Carpenter claimed that he returned less than 24 hours later and remained outside her home for hours, “conducting what can only be described as deliberate surveillance”. He turned up again on another day and watched the property from his car.

According to ABC News, Jorge Lepe, a private security guard for Carpenter, said in his declaration that he “observed an SUV pull up in the area” near Carpenter’s gate “and activate its hazard lights.”

He added that the individual got into the vehicle, fell asleep in the parked car for two hours, then re-parked his car “approximately 30 feet from her driveway.” When Lepe made contact with the person, whom he identified as Applegate, he asked him if there was anything he could help him with. Applegate allegedly replied, “‘No just chilling in my car'” and drove away. Another security guard, Hasan Brown, also alleged that he saw Applegate try to “conceal himself from view” whilst parked near Carpenter’s home.

As part of her plea for a restraining order, Carpenter provided screenshots from her security camera footage. She asked that a restraining order also protect the two people living with her, including her sister. A Los Angeles judge granted the order on 29 May, preventing Applegate from being within 100 yards of Carpenter, her home, her car, her workplace and the other residents of her property.

Carpenter wrote in her statement that it was “intentional stalking” and “the most disturbing violations of personal safety and privacy” that she had ever experienced. She called his claims he knew her a “dangerous, delusional and irrational fixation”. According to the documents, it left her with “severe and ongoing emotional distress” and the singer is “in fear” of him.

A follow up court hearing on whether the order needs to be extended has been set for 17 June. Applegate is also due in criminal court on 18 June for criminal trespassing.

According to Rolling Stone, LAPD detective Peter Doomanis also wrote a statement for Carpenter’s petition to the court. He stated that his “professional opinion” was that Applegate had a “disturbing and irrational fixation” on Carpenter and that he posed a “serious and escalating risk” to her safety.

William Applegate could not be immediately contacted. The Mirror has reached out to the Los Angeles Public Defender’s Office for comment and to ascertain if Applegate has a lawyer.
