Davina McCall has shared her support for King Charles and Princess Kate as she met the royals at a major event hosted by Cancer Research UK

Davina McCall has heaped praise on King Charles and Princess Kate. Tonight, the royals, along with Queen Camilla and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, who is a joint president of Cancer Research UK, joined forces at a reception celebrating the organisation’s work.

The event, hosted at St James’ Palace, London, is exceptionally important to the Monarch and the Princess of Wales, who have both been diagnosed with cancer. Kate last year revealed she was in remission from cancer. While her father-in-law has not made the same declaration, his treatment schedule was reduced thanks to an early diagnosis and a positive response to treatment.

King Charles is the patron of cancer research, and it marks the 125th anniversary of the organisation. The event also saw the three royals meet clinicians, volunteers, researchers and partners involved in the organisation’s research into prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Davina, herself, last year, announced she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The telly presenter underwent surgery to remove a lump and in April said she had been given the “all clear”. Speaking at the Cancer Research UK event, she told the Press Association: “It was a really wonderful exchange, and they (the King, Queen and Princess) are all wonderful.

“I can’t imagine what it must be like having going through something like cancer, and then sort of having to tell people about it, when possibly it would have been much easier and nicer to not have to share it with the world.”

The Masked Singer UK judge continued: “And I’ve got to say, after my brain tumour, I didn’t massively want to have to do that myself But it really helped me get through it by sharing it, and other people relating, or feeling like I could help.” In 2024, Davina underwent surgery to remove a benign brain tumour.

The royals walked through the Throne Room at St James’s Palace, the home of the British monarchy, on Tuesday evening, where the King was introduced to the charity’s representatives by Cancer Research UK chair Lord Simon Stevens of Birmingham. The Queen was introduced by the charity’s chief executive, Michelle Mitchell.

After shaking hands, Davina told Kate it was an “absolute honour” to meet her. The pair then discussed Ms McCall’s cancer journey, as the TV presenter told the princess it had been “liberating” to talk about her own experience with cancer publicly.

Kensington Palace announced Kate’s attendance at the reception on Tuesday morning. Boyzone star, Ronan Keating, was also in attendance at the event. The singer has continually used his platform to fight the disease after his mother, Marie, died from breast cancer in 1998, aged just 51.

The loss of Ronan’s mother led the singer to launch the Marie Keating Foundation to promote cancer awareness as well as early detection. The foundation also works alongside Cancer Research UK, helping to fund Cancer Awareness Roadshows, through events including the annual Emerdals & Ivy Ball.

Ronan himself has also faced a cancer scare. In 2009, the singer discovered a small lump on his testicle while holidaying. He was subsequently sent for tests and was given the “all clear”, after it emerged that the lump was a small cyst and since then, has raised awareness of testicular cancer.
