Mataro are the new champions of Spain after defeating Sant Andreu 10:9 away from home at the Pere Serrat swimming pool.
Jewel Roemer’s goal would start the proceedings by scoring for the visitors within 90 seconds. But the next two goals went Sant Andreu’s way, changing the score to Sant Andreu’s advantage (2:1). The rest of the period would see both teams cancel each other out, making the score 3:3 at the end of the first quarter. The second eight minutes saw Mataro take a slight lead with a 3:1 start after the first four minutes (4:6). The only goal scored after was a late goal by Maria Palacio Linde, bringing the score to 6:5 at the end of the quarter, with the game tightly poised for the second half.
The third quarter saw the tide turn Mataro’s way as goals from Roemer, Hauschild and Murillo gave them a 3:1 win in the period, giving them the favourites tag going into the final eight minutes (6:9). Alice Williams for Sant Andreu would take a chance early in the final quarter but Mataro’s Murillo would bag another to keep the three goal lead, but as Mataro were closing in on the title, the home team wasn’t done just yet. Two goals in a minute brought the difference between the clubs to one (9:10) with a minute and 47 seconds left. However, no further goals were scored and after finishing fourth last season, Mataro were back at the top of the podium.
This is Mataro’s third title after 2020 and 2024. Both teams will now be planning for Malta for the Champions League Final Four next week.
