Hyderabad: Questions over the security of a website linked to the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad surfaced after screenshots circulated online showing a page carrying a “Hacked By OVERTHRASH1337” message and references to a Pakistan-based hacking group.

The screenshots, widely shared on social media, prompted speculation that the research website of IIT Hyderabad had been compromised. Some users also pointed to the site’s subsequent “Under Maintenance” page, suggesting that the website may have been quickly taken offline after the alleged attack. However, institute officials said there is currently no evidence of any security breach or unauthorised interception.

According to IIT Hyderabad, its in-house technical team has been examining the issue since last week. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, an official said, “The website in question is already undergoing maintenance and updates during the semester break, and the maintenance status was not a reaction to any confirmed cyber incident.”

The institute said preliminary checks carried out by the department and technical team had not found any suspicious activity. Officials added that investigations carried out during the afternoon also did not reveal signs of a breach, though further examination is continuing.

“We found nothing suspicious so far. The team is still looking into it and will continue the checks,” the official said.

The institute maintained that its websites are protected through established security measures and are under the control of its technical teams. As a precaution, additional reviews are being carried out to ensure there are no vulnerabilities, officials said.

The screenshots that circulated online appeared to show a defaced webpage displaying a hacker message and a foreign flag. It remains unclear whether the images were linked to a live compromise, an isolated webpage, an old vulnerability, or another technical issue. IIT Hyderabad said a clearer picture is expected after further verification by the technical team.
