Bank Staffer Attacks Manager, Cashier In Vizag To Rob Gold, Held

Visakhapatnam: A debt-ridden bank employee attempted to rob the Bank of Baroda branch near ITI Junction in Marripalem area of Vizag city late on Wednesday evening but failed.

The accused has been identified as Y. Ravikumar, an employee of the Bank of Baroda, Yelamanchili branch. Ravikumar had earlier worked at the Marripalem branch.

Kancharapalem police said Ravikumar arrived at the Marripalem Bank of Baroda branch around 8 p.m. on Wednesday. He kept on a conversation with Marripalem branch manager Sivaramaraju and cashier Ramesh.

When Sivaramaraju and Ramesh started shifting pledged gold ornaments into a locker in the bank, Ravi Kumar took out a hammer from his bag and attacked the two to rob the gold.

When Ravikumar started leaving the bank, the manager and the cashier raised the bank alarm. Kancharapalem police rushed and arrested Ravikumar outside the bank when he tried to escape.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that Ravikumar, a native of Ramabhadrapuram in Vizianagaram district, took to playing online games and lost over ₹60 lakh. He decided to rob his erstwhile branch to repay his loans.

Kancharapalem inspector Ravi Kumar said both the manager and cashier sustained head injuries but are stable.
