Kalaburagi: Congress leader Priyank Kharge was on Thursday entrusted with the Home portfolio while retaining Information Technology and Biotechnology as Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot approved the allocation of portfolios for the newly expanded Karnataka Cabinet.
The allocation has a personal significance for Priyank, whose father, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, had served as Home Minister in the SM Krishna-led Congress government. Priyank thus becomes the second member of the family to hold the key portfolio.
According to the notification issued on Thursday, Priyank Kharge will handle Home (excluding Intelligence), IT-BT and E-Governance.
Former Assembly Speaker UT Khader has been assigned Health and Family Welfare, while Eshwar Khandre, who previously handled Forest, Ecology and Environment, has been given charge of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj.
MB Patil retained Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development, while Sathish Jarkiholi and Dr Sharan Prakash Patil were re-assigned the Public Works and Medical Education and Skill Development portfolios, respectively.
Chief Minister DK Shivakumar will hold Finance, Cabinet Affairs, DPAR, Intelligence and other unallocated portfolios, while Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara has been assigned Revenue and Sports.
Among other allocations, KH Muniyappa retained Food and Civil Supplies, KJ George retained Energy and was additionally given Tourism.
Ramalinga Reddy was allotted Major and Medium Irrigation, Krishna Byregowda was entrusted with Greater Bengaluru Development, Yathindra Siddaramaiah with Urban Development and Byrathi Suresh with Transport.
