Hyderabad: Veteran cartoonistonist and Deccan Chronicle cartoon editor Subhani Shaik has been selected for the prestigious Barton Award for Excellence in Cartooning 2026, instituted by the Indian Institute of Cartoonists (IIC), Bengaluru. “I am very happy to receive this award, which is every cartoonist’s dream. I am very grateful to the jury for selecting me for this prestigious honour,” Subhani said on receiving the news.
Announcing the award on Friday, the institute said the annual honour was established by Bharat Mehta, the managing director of Bartons, and has been presented over the past four years to distinguished cartoonists for their contribution to the field. The award will be presented at a function marking the 25th anniversary of the Indian Institute of Cartoonists in Bengaluru on June 13. The event will also feature the distribution of prizes for the International Maya Kamath Memorial Award Cartoon Contest 2026 and an exhibition of selected entries at the Indian Cartoon Gallery. The event will commemorate the 75th birth anniversary of noted cartoonist Maya Kamath whose work and legacy continue to inspire generations of artists. She worked in The Asian Age, a sister concern of DC.
