Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam MP Mathukumilli Sribharat has underlined the importance of satellite-based maritime surveillance systems for coastal security and resource management during a visit to Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) in Tromsø, Norway.

Sribharat, accompanied by Nandyal MP Byreddy Shabari, visited the facility on the final day of the India–Norway Knowledge Exchange Tour.

KSAT officials briefed the delegation on the organisation’s satellite ground station network and its applications in maritime monitoring, environmental observation and security. The presentations covered areas such as maritime traffic monitoring, illegal fishing detection, oil spill surveillance, climate data collection and disaster management support.

Speaking on the occasion, Sribharat said India could benefit from advanced satellite-enabled surveillance systems, given its extensive coastline. He noted that such technologies could strengthen coastal security, improve disaster preparedness, protect marine resources and support environmental conservation efforts.

The discussions also focused on opportunities for cooperation between India and Norway in areas including sustainable development, green technologies, the blue economy and space-based applications.

Sribharat said technology partnerships and knowledge-sharing initiatives could contribute to innovation-led growth and help address challenges related to climate change and maritime governance.

He observed that international exchange programmes provide exposure to global best practices and promote collaboration in research, technology development and capacity building. He added that stronger bilateral cooperation in emerging sectors would benefit both countries and support sustainable development.
