From Nursery to Coastline: Astaranga’s Mangrove Regeneration Efforts

As climate change and damage to coastal areas continue to affect Odisha’s shoreline, restoring mangrove forests has become an important way to protect the coast. In the coastal villages of Astaranga, a mangrove regeneration project supported by Signature Packaged Drinking Water is helping bring back damaged ecosystems while involving local communities in conservation efforts.

To understand the impact of the initiative on the ground, we travelled from Konark to Astaranga and visited the project site. The project aims to restore more than 60 acres of degraded land by planting mangrove saplings, with a focus on improving the environment and supporting local livelihoods.
The journey to the plantation site involved a boat ride through the region’s waterways, offering a glimpse of the coastal landscape that the project is working to protect. Upon arrival, local community members involved in the initiative welcomed us and shared their experiences of taking part in mangrove restoration activities.

At the plantation site, rows of young mangrove saplings highlighted the ongoing efforts to bring damaged land back to life. We joined community members in planting saplings and observed the work being carried out to help them survive and grow.

The visit also included a tour of the nursery where saplings are grown before being planted at restoration sites. Project staff explained that it takes around three to four months for a sapling to grow from a seed and become ready for plantation.

According to project representatives, Odisha’s coastline faces several challenges, including cyclones, coastal erosion, rising sea levels, changing weather patterns, habitat loss and coastal encroachment. These issues have a major impact on both the environment and the people who depend on it for their livelihoods.

“While restoration alone cannot solve all these challenges, healthy mangrove ecosystems act as a natural shield by reducing the impact of waves, protecting coastlines and strengthening the surrounding environment,” a project representative explained during the visit. They added that the initiative also aims to encourage community participation in conservation while supporting long-term efforts to deal with climate change.
