ANANTAPUR: Andhra Pradesh’s ambitious Yogandhra 2026 campaign got off to a flying start on Sunday with 25,000 people registering on the very first day and more than 50,000 individuals receiving yoga training across the state.
Launching the state-level programme at the historic Lepakshi Temple in Sri Sathya Sai district, Health minister Satya Kumar Yadav said the government aims to involve one crore people in yoga activities ahead of the International Day of Yoga on June 21.
Describing yoga as a symbol of India’s culture and way of life, the minister said its role in improving physical and mental well-being has been scientifically established. He called upon people from all sections of society to actively participate in the movement.
Commissioner (Health and Family Welfare) G. Veerapandian said the awareness and promotional programmes will continue in all 28 districts till June 20. He declared that 5,992 master trainers have already completed their training and are now conducting sessions for the public.
About 50,752 people underwent yoga training on Sunday alone, while the government has set a target of training 2.5 lakh yoga volunteers and trainers statewide.
The inaugural event at Lepakshi witnessed participation from 1,952 people. Similar programmes have been held at Vontimitta in Kadapa district, Manginapudi Beach in Krishna district, and SV Zoo Park in Tirupati, drawing enthusiastic participation, officials have stated.
Theme-based yoga sessions are also being organised across the state. In Vijayawada, around 1,000 police personnel participated in a special yoga programme, while 845 farmers attended a dedicated session in Amalapuram.
Yoga awareness competitions conducted through 253 gram and ward secretariats have attracted nearly 1,700 participants on the first day. The competitions will continue for the next 13 days.
