Shoshana Bean finally has her hands on a Tony Award, which she won for playing the role of single mom, ‘Lucy Emerson’ in the movie-to-musical adaptation, The Lost Boys. The talented American actress, singer and songwriter has been in the industry for two decades, and with her stronger skills, Soshana has built a name for herself. She is known for her biggest shows on Broadway, and her debut was in the popular musical Hairspray. After this, she bagged an opportunity to play the role of ‘Elpahaba’ in Wicked. Apart from that, she was also seen in Billy Crystal’s Mr. Saturday Night and Alicia Keys’ Hell’s Kitchen.

Shoshana is also a music artist, and she has released many EPs and albums. One of her best albums to date has been Only Smoke, and did you know that it stemmed from an abrupt and painful breakup that Shoshana experienced? Shoshana Bean has always kept her personal life private, and no details about the same have ever been made public. The powerhouse of talent, Shoshaha’s most of the albums and songs stemmed from heartbreaks; however, when it came to Only Smoke, it was something different from the rest.

Tony Award winner, Shoshana Bean’s best album, Only Smoke, was inspired by a painful breakup

Speaking about the same, Shoshana, in an interview with PEOPLE, revealed that she, in her mind, understood that this heartbreak would give her the best album of her career. Speaking about why it’s different from her other albums, Shoshana described that while her other albums or songs dealt with an angle of blaming and pointing fingers, in the case of Only Smoke, it’s about taking accountability for one’s own actions, own patterns and behaviours, for that matter.

Having said that, it was never easy for Shoshana, as she feels that holding the mirror to yourself is a hard thing to do, but chasing someone else’s choices and stuff will eventually lead the person absolutely nowhere. She could be quoted as saying:

“I really wanted to make sure inside of the writing of these songs that it wasn’t just, ‘You’re a bad guy, you’re a bad guy, you’re a bad guy.’ Because I have to own some decisions and choices that I made. So I decided to be more accountable instead of pointing the finger. That was new for me — and I won’t lie, it’s hard work to turn the mirror on ourselves and really examine our own patterns and behavior.”

In the same interview, Shoshaha Bean detailed the song that the album features, while adding that while this is explicitly about heartbreak, the main theme of this was how to release ‘shame’. All she wanted to do was to write a ‘goodbye letter’ through the lyrics, and in the process, she realised that she didn’t address her shame. To mention, the song, Only Thing Left, from the album was the last song, and it was written within only one week before the recording. According to Shoshana, it was her final answer, and it was something like letting someone go. Sharing more about the same, Shoshana said:

“And I realized the one thing I hadn’t addressed was my shame. Because I didn’t understand that that’s what shame felt like. I thought I was owning responsibility, but really I was just beating myself up for choices that were already over. That was me saying, ‘It’s over.’ That’s what that song is. It is like, ‘You’re the last piece of this puzzle. You can go now. Let me be free.’ ”
