EXCLUSIVE: Iconic DJ Steve Aoki stunned crowds at London’s Ministry of Sound as he carried out his latest legendary cake throw – but with a twist

World renowned DJ Steve Aoki has confessed he is “amazed” by the reaction of his latest cake throw. The disc jockey, 48, has an iconic “caking” ritual that he carries out during his live sets.

But he confessed his recent offering in London was an “unexpected moment to remember”. As the stateside DJ entertained crowds in England’s capital, he found himself delving into a hotly contested debate.

The star was on hand to help fans party well into the early hours at the Ministry of Sound and they braced themselves for his legendary cake throw. But what happened next stopped many in their tracks.

Instead of his usual sheet cakes, Aoki swapped them out for giant McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes instead. And the crowd was sent into a frenzy as fans got the full Jaffa experience as supersized helpings flew from the DJ booth.

The revellers were showered with light sponge, dark chocolate and tangy orange jelly – and Aoki unexpectedly entered the cake or biscuit debate.

Speaking to the Mirror, the DJ said: “I’ve played a lot of shows in London over the years, and UK crowds always bring a different kind of energy. When I decided I was going to throw giant Jaffa Cakes and looked into it, I was amazed by just how passionate people are about whether they’re a cake or a biscuit.

“The second they started flying into the crowd, everyone instantly understood the reference. That’s when I knew it would be one of those unexpected moments that people would remember.”

He admitted the Jaffa Cake is a “uniquely British” favourite which made him want to switch things up for the gig. “Having thrown over 30,000 cakes around the world since 2011, I’m fairly sure only in the UK could a cake throw spark a national debate,” he said.

But he stopped short of giving his opinion on the argument. The moment quickly went viral with fans debating once again.

While some insisted the DJ had outed himself as a true cake believer, others firmly argued that despite the sponge base, no product found in the biscuit aisle could ever truly be considered a cake.

Commenting on a video shared on TikTok, one user said: “I thought he throws cakes, not biscuits?” Another added: “Did he just throw giant Jaffa Cakes? Obsessed.”

A McVitie’s spokesperson said of Aoki’s interesting cake throw choice: “We can’t say watching Jaffa Cakes fly across one of London’s most renowned dance floors, courtesy of legendary DJ Steve Aoki, was on our bucket list for 2026 – but we love it!

“We’re thrilled to see he’s on the right side of history too. Steve is right. Jaffa Cakes are, and always have been, cakes!”
