Mikey Graham’s daughter has furiously slammed trolls who criticised her father for not being on stage for the entire duration of Boyzone’s final concerts last week
Mikey Graham’s daughter has hit out at people who criticised her dad following Boyzone’s final concerts. Last weekend, the Irish singer and his bandmates took to the stage at London’s Emirates Stadium on Friday and Saturday for what were their final concerts.
Although it was billed as a full reunion for the first time in almost a decade, Shane Lynch, Ronan Keating, and Keith Duffy opened the show as a trio. Mikey, 53, only appeared on stage midway through the concerts for a handful of songs.
He later returned to the stage towards the end of the concert as the legendary Irish group prepared to bow out for the final time. But while some people praised Mikey, who had openly said he wouldn’t participate in a full reunion, he was also the target of online trolling.
Now, his daughter, Sienna, has spoken for the first time and revealed it took a lot for her famous father to return to the limelight. “No one will ever know the extent that it took my dad to get to this point and get onto this stage and perform to many people in that way, so as his daughter, as I can say is that I am incredibly proud of him and that is the bottom line,” Sienna said.
Speaking to Evoke, she added: “I think with the (Sky) documentary and everything – I said this before – I think coming into the shows, everyone has come in with so much awareness of what everyone has been through over the years and I almost feel like that because of that awareness, it also enhances the pride that we all feel.
“This kind of shows that you can go through struggles and come out the other end and that there is so much joy to be had within this world and starting fresh.” Sienna explained that seeing comments criticising her father can be tough, but above all else, she is “incredibly proud” of her dad’s achievements.
Boyzone have sold over 25 million records worldwide, cementing them as one of the most successful pop acts in music history. While the family had chats before the performances, Mikey is “secure” according to Sienna, who was glad that he took part in the two gigs.
Seeing her father on stage was an emotional moment due to his confidence. Sienna even “welled up” during the performances. And Mikey wasn’t the only member of the Graham family involved in the shows.
Sienna directed, produced and edited the visuals which were displayed across the giant screens throughout the shows. These included interviews with the “Boyzone kids”, including Jay Duffy, Billie Rae Lynch, Missy Keating, Jack Keating and Ali Keating.
During their Sky documentary, Mikey explained he fell into depression after the band went their separate ways in 2000. Speaking in the documentary, Mikey said: “I don’t want to go back to how I felt for many years.
“To see them for too long would remind me of that and my future is way too important to me to waste it looking back on my past.” The band formed in 1993 and also included Stephen Gately. Stephen tragically died at his home in Mallorca on October 10, 2009, aged 33. His body was discovered later in the morning, and his cause of death was ruled to have been caused by a pulmonary oedema from an undiagnosed heart condition.
