It’s the question on every West Australian’s lips: where can they go to watch the kick off of the FIFA World Cup in the wee hours of Friday morning?
The FIFA World Cup is set to kick off with co-hosts Mexico set to take on South Africa in the early hours of Friday morning in WA.
This year’s global event takes place across three separate nations for the first time and will be held in Mexico, Canada and the United States up until the round of 16 teams, with the finals all held in US cities.
However, the time difference between North America and Australia, particularly Western Australia, means there will be some late nights and very early mornings ahead for fans across the country.
Fortunately, the state government has offered a trading hours exemption for licensed venues across the state.
Approved venues will be able to continue to trade for up to half an hour after the end of each match, meaning patrons can get together and enjoy a drink despite the unfriendly time difference.
To date, 28 pubs, bars and sporting clubs have received approvals for the extended trading exemption, with the majority within the metropolitan area.
However, regional fans will also get an opportunity to follow the cup into the early hours of the morning with venues in Bunbury, Dalyellup and Kalgoorlie all open for business.
Pubs and bars as far south as Mandurah and as north as Carramar will be taking part in the extended trading throughout the tournament.
Venues are still able to apply for the special dispensation, but are urged to apply soon as the process takes around a week to process.
Northbridge is expected to come alive for the World Cup with matches to be played on a big screen in the Piazza, similar to broadcasts in Fed Square in Melbourne.
The Socceroos will open their tournament against Turkey on Sunday at a very respectable time of midday here in WA, although the following match against the USA is scheduled for 3am on Saturday, June 20.
The final group match for the national team will be against Paraguay on Friday, June 26 at 10am.
The semi-finals for the tournament are set to be played at 3am in Dallas and Atlanta before the final is scheduled in New York on Monday, July 20 at 3am.
