Poised to become the world’s first trillionaire as SpaceX goes public, controversial businessman Elon Musk is back in the spotlight. While best known for his sweeping corporate empires, the billionaire has increasingly used his massive platform to weigh in on highly contentious topics – ranging from geopolitical riots to human reproduction.
He sparked intense debate this week after taking to X to encourage protests in Belfast following a wave of violent riots. This is far from the first time the world’s richest man has waded into UK politics, and he shows no signs of holding back his divisive opinions.
Musk has previously made his stance on procreation very clear. Arguing that falling birth rates pose a huge threat to the human race, he has declared that it as “not just a crisis, but the crisis”. Embracing the ‘pronatalism’ movement, he’s urged others to have large families, and claimed that he is doing his absolute best to lead by example.
To accommodate his massive family, Musk reportedly spent £27 million in 2024 on a sprawling 14,000-square-foot compound in Texas designed to help him coordinate schedules with his children.
However, his unconventional family dynamic has drawn sharp public criticism from the mothers of his children. Here is a closer look inside his complex and ever-expanding family tree…
Six children
Musk shares six children with his first wife, author Justine Wilson. The pair were married from 2000 and 2008. During that time, their first child Nevada Alexander was born in 2002. Tragically, he died from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) when he was only 10 weeks old.
Writing in an essay in Marie Claire in 2010, Justine opened up about her grief. She said: “I buried my feelings… coping with Nevada’s death by making my first visit to an IVF clinic less than two months later. Elon and I planned to get pregnant again as swiftly as possible. Within the next five years, I gave birth to twins, then triplets.”
Vivian and Griffin
Two years later, the pair welcomed twins Xavier and Griffin via IVF. But in 2022, Xavier, then 18, came out as transgender and confirmed they’d changed their name to Vivian Jenna Wilson.
Last summer Musk said his child had been “killed by the woke mind virus”. Vivian responded by saying her father has no idea what she was like as a child as he “quite simply wasn’t there, and in the little time that he was, I was relentlessly harassed for my femininity and queerness.”
More recently, she has spoken about her future in the US. “I don’t see my future in the United States. Even if [Trump is] only in office for four years, even if the anti-trans regulations magically don’t happen, the people who willingly voted this in are not going anywhere anytime soon,” she wrote on Threads.
Kai, Saxon and Damian
In 2006, the pair’s triplets, Kai, Saxon and Damian, were born. In a 2017 TedTalk, Justine revealed that they were conceived via IVF.
X AE A-Xii
In May 2020, Musk and his then-girlfriend Grimes shared the happy news that they’d become parents to a baby boy. Sharing the news on X, the Space X CEO said: “Mom & baby all good”.
Following the announcement, Musk shared the name of their son – revealing he was called X Æ A-Xii Musk. Both Elon and Grimes have discussed the pronunciation of their son’s name, with Grimes explaining on Instagram that it was pronounced: “just X, like the letter X, then A.I. Like how you said the letter A then I.” However, Musk appeared on Joe Rogan’s podcast in which he said that the ‘Æ’ in his son’s name is pronounced “ash”.
Previously, X Æ A-Xii, who Musk commonly refers to as X, stole the show when he appeared at a joint press conference from the Oval Office alongside his father and President Donald Trump. During the televised address, the toddler seemed to utter a remark while his father addressed journalists, prompting Trump to reach out in an attempt to hush him.
After a social media user told Grimes that X had been “very polite” while accompanying his father, she replied on X: “He should not be in public like this. I did not see this, thank u for alerting me. But I’m glad he was polite. Sigh.”
Strider and Azure
Musk is also a father to twins Strider and Azure, whom he shares with Shivon Zilis, a senior executive at his AI company Neuralink. The twins were born in November 2021.
Exa Dark Sideræl
In December 2021, Musk and former partner Grimes welcomed daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, via surrogate. In a 2022 interview with Vanity Fair, the musician shared the news and explained how they’d nicknamed their daughter Y.
Speaking of the name choice, Grimes said that ‘Exa’ refers to a term in supercomputing, while Dark represents “the unknown”. She said: “People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe.” Meanwhile, she added that ‘Sideræl’ was a “more elven” spelling of ‘sidereal’ which she described as “the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time.”
Techno Mechanicus
Another child, Techno Mechanicus, who also goes by ‘Tau’, was also born to the pair, according to Walter Isaacson’s biography about the Tesla CEO.
Giving an insight into Musk’s parenting style in an interview with Wired in 2023, Grimes said: “I think their life is gonna be pretty intense. Being Elon’s kid is not the same as being anyone’s kid. In my house, at least, I want it to be more of a crazy warehouse situation and a cool art space.”
Grimes and Musk have endured difficulties in their coparenting relationship, in 2024, she said she had “spent a year locked in battle in a state with terrible mother’s rights,” and that she was “going bankrupt” from the legal battle. She also posted on X in 2025 beseeching her ex partner to get in touch about one of their children’s ‘medical issue’ – it is not known which one. “Plz respond about our child’s medical crisis. I am sorry to do this publicly but it is no longer acceptable to ignore this situation. This requires immediate attention. If you don’t want to talk to me can you please designate or hire someone who can so that we can move forward on solving this. This is urgent, Elon,” she alleged in the post.
Arcadia
In 2024, Elon and Shivon became parents to their third child together, a daughter called Arcadia.
Romulus
In 2024 influencer Ashley St. Clair alleged that she’d welcomed Elon’s 13th child. She has since filed a court petition demanding full custody of their son, referred to in the filings R.S.C, and asking Musk to take a paternity test. The baby’s name has since been revealed to be Romulus.
Now, messages sent between her and Musk are said to have been revealed. In one, she reportedly sent Musk a picture of her with the newborn. Musk asked if all was well, to which she replied he was “perfect”. Musk replied: “I look forward to seeing you and him this weekend.”
In a video last month, Ashley said her and Musk began talking about having a child together during a holiday
“As soon as I’m pregnant, this is when things start getting weird,” she told her followers. “There’s just things that are not adding up or that are different from what he previously said to me.”
“It was [a] very normal conversation,” she added. “His demeanor was normal. I know I’m going to get roasted for this, but in private, he was funny, but then it just got so f–king weird, man.”
Elsewhere in the video, she revealed that she had also had a son with a previous partner.
“The chances of me getting married and the white picket fence and the white dress, I believed that was out the window for me because I was already ‘stained’ as a single mom,” Ashley added “But, I wanted nothing more than to be a mom. I wanted more kids.”
“So, when Elon was like, ‘You should have kids, my only limited resource is time,’ of course, it is appealing to do what I always wanted to…be a mom and not have to worry about the s*** going on in this economy.”
In reports from last year, St Clair is alleged to have slammed Musk for his posts about his daughter Vivian, writing on social media, “Now why in the f**k when you know this would you repeatedly harass and target your OWN CHILD on the platform you own? I am just sick of this shit. I am sick of pretending like any of this is ok. I am sick that I enabled individuals who think it’s acceptable for a grown ass man to endanger the life of his child because he is so angry at this adult child having a life of her own.”
Seldon Lycurgus
Seldon is Elon’s fourth child with Shivon, and his 14th that is known. His exact birthdate has not been revealed, but Shivon wrote on X in February 2025, “Discussed with Elon and, in light of beautiful Arcadia’s birthday, we felt it was better to also just share directly about our wonderful and incredible son Seldon Lycurgus. Built like a juggernaut, with a solid heart of gold. Love him so much.”
