United Airlines has quietly made its MileagePlus pooling feature more valuable by changing one of the program’s biggest limitations.
United first introduced miles pooling in 2024, and allowed up to five MileagePlus members to pool some or all of their miles into a collective pot that can be used to book award flights for someone in (or out) of the pool.
That setup has some obvious benefits. But with many loyalty programs — including United’s — it comes with trade-offs, too.
One of the bigger “catches” to pooling your United miles was that they could then only be used to book United or United Express-operated flight; pooling them meant you lost the ability to use those miles to fly on partners such as Air Canada, Lufthansa, Air New Zealand and others.
That brings us to the good news: That policy has now changed.

United greenlights mileage pooling on partner awards
As first reported by Travel on Points and confirmed by a United spokesperson, pooled United miles are now eligible for use with more than 40 United airline partners, including on airlines both in and out of the Star Alliance.
Here’s what United said in a statement to TPG Friday:
“We’re always looking for new ways to evolve MileagePlus and bring our members more rewards, value and flexibility. We recently expanded Miles Pooling to be available across more than 40 airline partners – making it even easier for families and friends to combine their miles for upcoming trips. MileagePlus members have been able to redeem miles on partner airlines for a long time, and now with expanded Miles Pooling, they’ll be able to pool miles with family and friends to also redeem on other airlines.”

What this means for MileagePlus members
This is great news for United loyalists because it opens up more routes and award booking options. Instead of being limited to only United-operated flights with your pooled miles, you can book awards on dozens of its partners — which is especially helpful for long-haul international travel.
That said, there are still a few caveats to think through before pooling United miles. The airline still requires 72-hour waiting period from when you join the pool until you can contribute miles. There’s also an ongoing waiting period of 24 hours before miles transferred into the pool are available for use.
Also, keep in mind that United now provides award pricing discounts based on the elite status level and cardholder status of the person booking. This remains true for pooled miles, so pricing will be discounted (or not) based on the status and/or relevant United cards held by the person making the redemption within the pool.
Either way, though, the pooled miles are certainly a lot more flexible than they used to be.

Bottom line
Pooling airline miles can help turn small mileage balances into a usable award. Now that pooled United miles can be redeemed for partner flights, the feature is considerably more valuable — especially for families or groups that regularly travel together.
