Guwahati: Amid the warning of Manipur police chief Mukesh Singh that security forces would deal firmly with those who try to take the law into their hands or fire at security forces, the Joint Tribes’ Council on Sunday refused to take six bodies of Naga men killed by Kuki militants in captivity, till the preparators of the crime are brought to book.
After the identification of six Naga community members who were abducted and later found dead, Joint Tribes’ Council Convenor Merachao Inka demanded strict action against those responsible for the killings.
Demanding action against those allegedly involved in killing, Mr Inka said, “We have decided not to take bodies of those killed till our demands are fulfilled. We have placed some demands to the government. Those demands are—- first, those perpetrators and culprits who are involved in kidnapping innocent people should be arrested. Those involved are members of the women’s society of Leilon Vaiphei, the chief of Lalbai Vaiphei, who gave the order to abduct them, and a Manipur police personnel, Thanggilian. Then they handed them over to the KNF(P) (Kuki National Front (Progressive) cadres. The KNF(P) cadres took their lives. They are the murderers.”
The Joint Tribes’ Council has urged the government to take immediate steps to identify and arrest all those allegedly involved in the abduction and killings. Authorities have not yet responded to the allegations.
Meanwhile the Director General of Police said that security forces have succeeded in recovering around 70 percent of weapons looted from security forces.
He warned, “Anyone with arms who tries to take laws into their own hands will be dealt with very strictly. We will deal with them as per the law. Those with weapons would be arrested. Those who try to fire at us will be dealt with in self-defence. Proactive operations will continue till the situation is normal.”
The DGP who visited Churachandpur on Saturday also said, “A lot of misinformation is spreading on social media. We have a social media monitoring cell which takes action against those spreading false information that can lead to inter-community conflict. We are proactively engaging them and taking down those sites which are anti-social or anti-national.”
Mr Singh also said he visited Bishnupur and Churachandpur during which he held meetings with police, para-military and Army officers.
Police in a statement on Sunday said that the DGP chaired meetings with District Police officers, CAPFs/Assam Rifles, and civil society organisations.
