DJ and musician John Newman has revealed his fears for artists who are travelling in the industry after the death of American star Oliver Tree

John Newman has spoken out following the death of Oliver Tree, and claimed more has to be done to protect artists. American singer Oliver died aged 32 after the helicopter he was travelling in crashed in Rio De Janeiro.

Five other people were also killed in the tragic accident, including director Lucas Vignale. Argentinian YouTuber Gaspar Prim, known as Gaspi, DJ and producer Lucas Frota, whose real name was Lucas Brito Chaves also lost their lives, as did pilots Alexandre Souza and Charles Marsillac.

Following the tragedy, DJ and musician John took to Instagram to share his urgent appeal and give his views on travel in the music industry. He wrote: “It pains me so so much along with so many people im sure to read about the loss of Oliver Tree.

“We travel the world at such risk away from our familys [sic] to be able to achieve the amount of shows artists have to now to try and make a living. There is countless times I have been in vehicles feeling highly uncomfortable with the situation with drivers on phones, falling asleep, driving way over the speed limit.

“As our responsibility is travel the world to bring our art to the people and make a living with diving streaming payments and numbers I do think it should be the responsibility of others to at least give us safety.”

He went on: “Contracts are there for a reason and they are skipped to save funds for promoters, how can we stick to contract but cut the cost as simply as possible. Often to have un professional drivers to transport artists.”

The Love Me Again hit maker then urged: “Please the world of live music, keep us safe as we do you and the income of your family by selling tickets to your shows. Other artists, we have to be united in saying we deserve the small cost to the promoters to make sure we are transported safely.”

Following on, he added: “I understand this horrific accident may not of been due to the responsibility of a live music event etc. its just reading and seeing these reminders to be honest scare the s*** out of me and make you think how can I do something to make sure I get home to my family every time. X”

Local Civil Police launched an investigation into the tragedy following the incident. They requested a forensic examination of the crash site. In addition to the police, the local fire department, Traffic Engineering Company, Comlurb, and teams from 31st BPM have been working in the area.

The Brazillian Air Force said shortly after the incident: “The Brazilian Air Force (FAB), through the Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (CENIPA), informs that, this Sunday (June 14th), investigators from the Third Regional Service for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (SERIPA III), based in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), were called to carry out the Initial Action of the incident involving two aircraft, registration numbers PP-MAC and PR-DJJ, in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, in the Southwest Zone of Rio de Janeiro (RJ).
