Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh stood first in egg production, fourth in meat production and seventh in milk production in the country as per the estimates of the central government for 2025-26.
The animal husbandry department has realised remarkable achievements in the two years of good governance under the alliance government in the state.
Accordingly, the livestock sector contributed 12.17 per cent to the state GSDP.
The world-renowned Ongole and Punganur cattle breeds, the superior Nellore and Macherla sheep breeds and the famous Aseel poultry breed are the pride of the state.
The livestock sector has been a stable source of income to the state exchequer even under adverse climatic conditions.
The major achievements recorded by the department in the last two years are: free deworming programme, conduct of 26,512 veterinary health camps by providing quality healthcare services to 23 lakh animals and animal welfare schemes converged with erstwhile MGNREGS wherein construction of 30,313 livestock sheds on subsidy for the poor farmers was taken up.
The farmers were provided enhanced compensation for livestock losses during natural calamities from `37,500 to `50,000 per animal, supply of cattle feed, fodder seeds and chaff cutters; provided mobile veterinary ambulance services; livestock insurance scheme; distribution of sex-sorted semen straws worth `300 distributed at `150 each and embryo transfer technology adopted to produce 67 high genetic merit calves.
The department has proposed several programmes for 2026-27 and they are: utilisation of 10 lakh doses of sex-sorted semen with a subsidy support of `15 crore for production of superior female calves; introduction of a special poultry policy, filling up vacant posts of veterinary assistant surgeons, initiation of construction of the 777 new veterinary hospital buildings and to achieve a 15 per cent growth rate in the livestock sector and contributing towards the state’s target of `3 lakh crore GSDP by 2029-30.
