VIJAYAWADA: NTR district on Saturday reinforced its commitment to public health and environmental sustainability through yoga promotion and an anti-plastic awareness campaign led by district collector Dr G. Lakshmisha.

Ahead of International Yoga Day, the Intermediate Education Department organised a Students’ Theme Yoga programme on the banks of the Krishna River at Beram Park. Hundreds of students participated, performing yoga asanas and artistic displays.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Lakshmisha said yoga helps improve concentration, self-confidence, discipline and mental well-being, enabling students to cope better with stress and academic pressures.

“Yoga is the foundation for building a healthy future generation. Every student should make it a part of daily life,” he said.

The collector highlighted the state government’s Yogandhra initiative, aimed at promoting a healthy and prosperous Andhra Pradesh through the widespread adoption of yoga.

District intermediate education officer Prabhakar and students from various junior colleges attended the programme.

Later, Dr Lakshmisha participated in the Operation Clean Sweep campaign at Dharmavarappadu Thanda in Jaggayyapet mandal under the Swachhandhra–Swarnandhra programme.

The collector warned that single-use plastic posed a serious threat to the environment and public health by contaminating soil, water and air. He urged people to avoid plastic carry bags and switch to cloth bags.

Jaggayyapet MLA Sriram Rajagopal (Tataiah) called for greater public participation in maintaining village cleanliness and eliminating plastic waste. Cloth bags were distributed to villagers to encourage eco-friendly practices.

Officials appealed to residents to support sanitation and waste-management efforts, stating that cleaner villages could be achieved through responsible waste disposal and reduced plastic use.
