Netherlands rout Sweden to lead Group F

Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo scored two goals apiece to power the Netherlands to a 5-1 win over Sweden and move atop the Group F standings.

Brobbey’s goals came in the first half in the big win, bouncing back after a tournament-opening 2-2 draw with Japan.

The victory gives Netherlands a group-leading four points. Sweden has three points, with Japan and Tunisia scheduled to play later today.

Gakpo, who also had an assist, extended the lead to 3-0 just after half-time, scoring off a cross from Denzel Dumfries and then securing his own brace in the 54th minute.

Sweden, however, could not build on their strong performance in last week’s 5-1 walloping of Tunisia, suffering the country’s biggest World Cup defeat since losing 7-1 to Brazil in 1950.

So, what went down yesterday?

Here’s the short version:

  • The United States beat the Socceroos 2-0 to secure their spot in the round of 32
  • Morocco slipped one past Scotland in a 1-0 victory
  • Brazil scored three in the first half to see off Haiti 3-0
  • Paraguay defended the entire second half with one man down to eliminate Turkey in a 1-0 win

Good morning!

What day is it today? What time is it? Answer: it doesn’t matter because it’s the World Cup, baby.

Pick yourselves back up off the floor – or your bed, hopefully you are in a bed and not on the floor – and get ready for day 10 of a tournament that, bar Australia’s existentially unsettling result against the United States, has so far exceeded expectations.

If you would like the latest piece of evidence, the Netherlands have just rolled Sweden 5-1 in Houston. Yep, you heard that correctly. Who said the Dutch had an ageing squad?

Here’s what else is in store today (all AEST):

  • Germany v Ivory Coast, 6am
  • Ecuador v Curacao, 10am
  • Tunisia v Japan, 2pm
