Bidar: During a visit to the Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences (BRIMS) on Saturday, Upa Lokayukta Justice B Veerappa found Rs 1 lakh in cash, along with a cheque, in the bag of a laboratory technician and ordered an inquiry as the staff allegedly failed to provide a proper reply.
The cash and cheques were found in the possession of Sanjukumar, a lab technician, during Justice Veerappa’s visit to the laboratory section of the hospital.
Sources said the Upa Lokayukta questioned the staff member about the source of the money. However, the technician was allegedly unable to provide a satisfactory explanation.
He directed officials to seize the cash and cheque.
“We found Rs 90,000 cash and cheques of Rs 9 lakh. A criminal case is registered against him and he has been arrested,” Justice Veerappa told reporters.
He interacted with patients and inquired about treatment facilities and the distribution of medicines. He also took note of old and torn beds in the wards and instructed hospital authorities to ensure clean drinking water on all floors and provide seating arrangements for attendants accompanying patients.
During his visit on Saturday Justice B Veerappa also visited several public facilities in Bidar city, including the new bus stand, old bus stand, solid waste management plant, APMC yard, and the Tahsildar’s office, and reviewed the functioning and infrastructure at these locations.
At the city’s new bus stand, he inspected cleanliness, toilet facilities, drinking water arrangements and parking facilities. Noticing that users were being charged Rs 10 for using the toilets instead of the prescribed fee of Rs 3, he warned the staff and directed them to strictly collect only the approved charge of Rs 3 in future.
During his visit to the APMC fruit and vegetable market, Justice Veerappa expressed dissatisfaction over inadequate parking arrangements. He instructed the district administration to submit a proposal to the government for developing a well-equipped market and parking facility on five acres of land.
The Upa Lokayukta later visited the solid waste disposal unit at Sultanpur village. Villagers complained that contamination of drinking water sources, the menace of stray dogs and foul odour from the waste processing facility had become a serious problem for surrounding villages.
Justice Veerappa directed Municipal Commissioner Mukul Jain to ensure that waste is scientifically disposed of by storing it in designated pits, covering it with soil and developing greenery over the site.
