Vernon Kay has revealed he has been “banned” from discussing one subject on BBC Radio 2
Vernon Kay has disclosed that he’s been “banned” from talking about one of his cherished subjects on BBC Radio 2 following his return to broadcasting after a brief hiatus. The 52-year-old host was presenting his mid-morning programme when he digressed during the station’s Cash Register competition.
After reading out a note from listeners bound for the Norfolk coastline, the broadcaster confessed his passion for bacon sandwiches had got him into hot water.
He informed his audience: “Second in Gordon and Debbie Benning, getting ready to go to Hunstanton for a lovely bacon baguette at the cafe on the cliff. You know how I feel about a bacon sandwich. Janine has banned me from talking about my Saturday morning bacon sandwich in a Nigella Lawson styling. She finds it quite creepy. How I talk about lashings and lashings of French butter. Slowly oozing into a thick slice of sourdough. Creating tantalizing and magical moments on the palate.”
Vernon subsequently apologised to listeners for sounding somewhat poorly as he pressed on with the show.
He explained: “I’m a bit throaty today. I do apologize. I don’t know what it is, but I woke up on Friday morning with a really sore throat,” reports the Express.
“So, I’m not gonna lie because we’re all friends on mid-morning on BBC Radio 2. It might be more music less chat today. A bit throaty, we’re on the honey and lemon.”
The playful moment occurred just after Vernon’s return from taking a day off to spend quality time with his younger daughter Amber. Earlier this month, the Radio 2 presenter revealed to his audience he’d be stepping away from his Friday slot to join his 17-year-old daughter on university tours before she starts her studies in 2027.
On air, Vernon quipped: “I’m not in tomorrow. I’m having Friday off. Because I’m going to university open days. I think the time is right for me to step away from broadcasting and go back into further education.
“No, I’m joking. I’m taking our youngest to open days around universities and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s an exciting time in life, and also I get to hold her hand.
“Do you know what I mean? Not necessarily on the campuses but walking around whatever town we’re going to. So sweet.”
Vernon is dad to Amber and older daughter Phoebe, 21, whom he shares with Tess Daly.
This family moment arrives during a difficult chapter for Vernon. Back in May, he and Tess revealed they had parted ways amicably following nearly 23 years of marriage.
The former pair, long considered one of telly’s most solid couples, made the announcement through a joint statement. They remain committed to raising their daughters together, with Amber now looking ahead to university life as application deadlines approach.
