Chennai: Regretting that the Governor’s Address had no roadmap for the development of the State and no had mention of any government achievement during the last 40 days of TVK rule, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Udhayanidhi Stalin wondered what compromise the State government made with the Governor in acceding its territory and allowing the singing of the national anthem twice in the Assembly, much against tradition.
Speaking on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s Address on Monday, Udhayanidhi Stalin urged the government to come up with schemes and programmes that would address real issues concerning the State and not just facilitate the uploading of reels in social media as it was happening now. Since he and his party colleagues were waiting to hear about the government’s achievements, the Governor’s Address was a big disappointment for them, he said.
Thanking the TVK regime for promising to expand the DMK government’s Breakfast Scheme in schools for students studying till Class 8 and increase the amount paid to women under the Kalignar Urimai Thogai scheme to Rs 2500 a month, he regretted that the scrapping of the Nan Mudhalvan scheme that had helped 41 students and raised the number of those clearing the UPSC examination from the State.
Acknowledging Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay mentioning the success of the Self-Help Groups (SHGs), he said the scheme was started under the DMK rule of M Karunanidhi and that it grew well when he was in charge of the department.
Taking the dig at the new government for the constant power cuts that the State was facing, inconveniencing the people, he referred to a meeting of former Union Minister and Congress leader and VCK president Thol Thirumavlavan – both from parties allied to the TVK – happening in the dark for one hour due to power cut.
Also he referred to the deteriorating Law and Order situation in the State with many crimes against women and children being committed with regularity and pointed to two incidents, one in Coimbatore and the other in Gummidpoondi that saw the police not handing over the bodies of the child victims of rape and murder to the parents but disposing it themselves, and said that it made him wonder if he was living still in Tamil Nadu or in some distant State like Uttar Pradesh or Madhya Pradesh.
Udhayanidhi Stalin regretted that the special task force, ‘Singa Pen Padai’ launched by the government to protect women instead of cracking down on culprits of the rampant crimes against women was happily shooting ‘reels’ and uploading them on social media, following the footsteps of the rulers.
The Chief Minister should intervene and address burning issues like farmers’ problems, power cuts and deterioration of law and order and also speak about them in his reply to the Governor’s Address as they were not mentioned in the Governor’s Address, he said.
