Kanye West is facing a fresh blow as his upcoming July 4 concert in Texas is at risk of being cancelled over his previous antisemitic comments, with the mayor hitting out at the rapper

Kanye West faces having yet another concert cancelled. The controversial rapper is due to perform at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, on July 4, but Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones has hit out at the scheduled event.

In recent years, West, who has rebranded himself as Ye, has come under fire for controversial antisemitic comments on social media. But while he has recently issued a public apology for his actions, it appears that this isn’t enough for Ortiz Jones.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Gina said: “I support cancelling the @kanyewest concert. Military City USA should not host someone with a record of hate speech and antisemitic comments in a city-funded facility like our Alamodome—not ever, and certainly not on July 4th, our Nation’s 250th birthday.

“Standing up to antisemitism is exactly what it takes to achieve a more perfect Union.” Gina’s post was met with a mixed response, with people citing the First Amendment of the US – protecting freedom of speech, others, also explained that the concert would bring in money to the city. While many were also quick to praise her for her statement.

“Thank you,” said one person. A second added: “I am 100% on your side for this!” The comments from Gina come after Ye’s gig, headlining the Pulse of Gaia Festival at the RCF Arena in Reggio Emilia on July 18, was cancelled.

The event was pulled by city prefect Salvatore Angieri, due to “concerns” raised by the local Jewish community after West’s previous comments. A show scheduled for July 17 featuring fellow American rapper Travis Scott at the Hellwatt Festival has also been scrapped, as the two events were booked on back-to-back dates.

A translated statement released by the Reggio Emilia authorities following a meeting to determine the concerts’ fate read: “The meeting was dedicated to examining the public order and safety issues associated with the American artist’s (West) concert and the Travis Scott event, also scheduled at the RCF Arena.

“Based on the assessments made during the committee meeting and further investigations into safety and security aspects, the prefect… (ordered) the prohibition of both concerts.

“The decision concerns two events scheduled for consecutive dates at the RCF Arena, a venue with a capacity of approximately 103,000 spectators, and was made to ensure public order and safety.

“Given the close temporal connection between the events and the large crowds expected within 24 hours. The overall assessment also took into account the cancellation of previous concerts by the American rapper in other countries and the real risk of counter-demonstrations.”

Earlier this year, a gig in Marseille, France, was called off after he was refused entry to the UK earlier that month, resulting in the scrapping of his headline slots at London’s Wireless Festival amid fury over antisemitic comments.

West dropped a track called Heil Hitler in 2025 and had previously sold a swastika T-shirt on his website. He’s also faced fierce criticism for posting antisemitic tweets and claiming slavery was “a choice”.

In January, West purchased a full-page advertisement in the Wall Street Journal to issue an apology, headlined: “To Those I’ve Hurt.” He wrote: “I am not a Nazi or an antisemite. I love Jewish people.”

He explained that his bipolar disorder caused him to spiral into “a four-month-long, manic episode of psychotic, paranoid and impulsive behaviour that destroyed my life”.

His headline slot at Wireless Festival was also pulled, and the entire event was later cancelled in the wake of West being refused entry to the United Kingdom.

The Mirror has approached Kanye’s spokesperson for comment.
