Vernon Kay, who seemed to come dangerously “close” to swearing, made the remarks as he chatted to colleague Bobbie Pryor on today’s broadcast of his Radio 2 show

Vernon Kay seemed to come perilously close to letting a swear word slip live on BBC Radio 2 while venting about a pet peeve that annoys him. The presenter made the remarks during a chat with colleague Bobbie Pryor on his mid-morning programme (June 24), where the conversation turned to how Bobbie “used to go out dressed as a Womble”.

He went on to reveal she wasn’t the “only one”, sharing that listener Tracy had submitted a photograph of herself and her twin sister kitted out as the cherished children’s characters.

Bobbie described it as being “of a time”, prompting Vernon to quip: “When picking up litter was cool”, alluding to the Wombles’ habit of gathering and recycling waste. Bobbie said: “It’s still cool.”

Vernon concurred, with Bobbie suggesting it was “cooler now”. Vernon declared: “It really is, and we need to do it because a lot of people take our communities for granted and just chucking…” Following a brief hesitation, Vernon continued: “Rubbish everywhere.”

It was at this juncture that Vernon appeared to be “close” to using a more colourful term. He went on: “Ooh, nearly! Oh, so close! Janice-Janine (Vernon’s producer), I was so close!”

“I was so close! ‘Cos it annoys me, you see. It gets my back up. I don’t want to live in your garbage, and no one else does. Take it home; find a bin and put it in. It’s really easy.”

This wouldn’t mark the first occasion such a slip has occurred. Back in 2025, Vernon was forced to issue an apology after swearing live on air while discussing Sara Cox’s Great Northern Marathon Challenge on his programme.

His remarks followed an advertisement for the challenge. A voiceover declared: “Go Sara, go, you’re doing fabulously… Sara’s Great Northern Marathon Challenge continues.”

Vernon responded: “It does indeed! Bloody hell.”

He corrected himself: “I mean flipping hell, oh gosh. Sorry, sorry, I apologise, I apologise.” He explained that the slip-up occurred because he was moved by a boy’s story that “got him”.

It comes after Vernon shed light on his disappointment after losing out on an award at this year’s ARIAS, where he and his team had been nominated.

Janine reflected: “Honestly, what a privilege. We were saying how lucky we are to just spend an evening with some amazing, creative, fantastic people in the radio world and to just enjoy celebrating their successes. Amazing.”

Vernon, who was absent from the ceremony, quipped: “That’s Janine politely saying, ‘We’re absolutely gutted that we lost’. Well done, Janine, you’re such a professional. I wouldn’t have said that.”
