Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court expressed strong displeasure over the failure of School Education Secretary Dr Yogita Rana to appear before it despite being served notices in a contempt of court case.
During the hearing on Thursday, Justice T. Madhavi Devi questioned the official, asking, “Is this the respect you show the courts?” The judge warned that such conduct would not be tolerated in the future and that any repetition could invite contempt proceedings.
The contempt petition was filed by a Hyderabad resident Syed Mehboob, alleging that the authorities had failed to implement the High Court’s 2023 order relating to his compassionate appointment. The court took exception after Yogita Rana neither appeared in person nor sought exemption from appearance. The judge directed her to appear before the court by the afternoon.
Later, Yogita Rana appeared virtually from Nizamabad and submitted an unconditional apology, stating that her absence was due to a communication lapse. She assured the court that such an incident would not recur.
However, Justice Madhavi Devi observed that the petitioner’s life was being affected as officials continued to shift responsibility between departments. The High Court directed the authorities to implement its earlier order and file a counter-affidavit in the contempt petition. The matter was adjourned for three weeks. The court also exempted Yogita Rana from personal appearance at the next hearing.
