Katie Waissel, who shot to fame when she competed on the seventh series of The X Factor in 2010, has issued an update after she ‘nearly died’ amid a her recent return to hospital.
Katie Waissel has issued an update after she “nearly died” amid a hospital dash. The former X Factor contestant, 40, who competed on the 2010 edition of the ITV reality show alongside One Direction, Cher Lloyd and eventual winner Matt Cardle, was rushed back to hospital with a suspected blood clot on her lung — less than two days after being discharged while still recovering from severe bacterial pneumonia.
Now, the reality star, who went on to appear on Celebrity Big Brother following her rise to fame, has issued another update to her fans where she candidly spoke of just how close she came to death and how the whole incident has given her a new appreciation for life.
She wrote on X: “I’m still a little bit in shock, if I’m honest, coming to terms with just how close I came to not being here anymore. It’s made me realise there are still so many things I want to see, do, learn and experience.
“And that perhaps ‘one day’ isn’t a date we should rely on. So, I’ve decided it’s time to write a proper bucket list and start ticking things off.”
It all came just days after the singer confessed to her followers that she was “far closer to the edge than I realised” after being rushed to the private St John + St Elizabeth’s Hospital in London suffering from “severe” bacterial pneumonia.
Taking to X on Thursday, Katie wrote: “After a day and a half at home, I’m now BACK at the hospital and not doing so great. Whilst still battling this awful bacterial pneumonia, there’s now a suspected blood clot on my lung, so I’m back in for more scans, tests and needles. I’m fairly certain I’ve run out of veins for people to poke at this point.
Katie, who has seven-year-old son Hudson with ex-partner Andy Speer, then thanked the team at the private hospital for their treatment and insisted that her duties as a mother were now her top priority going forward.
She said: “That said, I couldn’t be more grateful for the care I’ve received. The team at @HCAHospitalsUK Wellington Hospital have been absolutely incredible and have looked after me every step of the way. Right now, I just want to get better and get home to my little boy. Fingers crossed for some good news.”
The star first broke the news of her ordeal with a candid update where she apologised to her followers for her sudden absence from social media. She said: “Sorry I’ve been a little MIA, everyone.
“A couple of days ago I was rushed into hospital by ambulance and admitted as an emergency. It turns out I have severe bacterial pneumonia, so I’ve been rather unexpectedly residing in a hospital bed in Central London ever since. I won’t lie, it’s been one of the most frightening and excruciatingly painful experiences of my life.
“At one point I was apparently far closer to the edge than I realised. It’s a very strange feeling being told afterwards just how serious things had become, when the whole time I genuinely thought I just needed to push through it and I’ll be fine because I have to be.”
