Vijayawada:The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta and the Vijayawada commissioner of police S. V. Rajashekhar Babu, seeking reports within a week on the alleged custodial death of Gade Sai Krishna.
The notices followed a complaint filed by rights lawyer Immaneni Rama Rao, alleging that Sai Krishna died in police custody at Krishnalanka Police Station and that his body subsequently disappeared.
In his complaint, Rama Rao alleged that the body was cremated and the ashes were dumped in the Krishna river to conceal the custodial death.
Taking cognisance of the complaint, the NHRC described the allegations as a serious violation of Article 21 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to life.
The commission directed the police to recover the deleted CCTV footage from Krishnalanka Police Station and trace Sai Krishna’s mortal remains.
The NHRC also observed that the alleged incident, if established, would violate international human rights standards. It directed the authorities to provide security to Sai Krishna’s mother, Gade Vijayalakshmi, and sought a detailed action-taken report within a week.
The commission also sought details of the FIR, action taken against the police personnel concerned and the interim compensation, if any, provided to the victim’s family.
