Gauravi Kumari and Padmanabh Singh on growing up like twins with wildly different personalities

Fiery laal maas. Lake views from Amer Fort. Thaans of colourful bandhanis at Bapu Bazaar. Jaipur is famous for its attention-grabbing offerings—most notably, the City Palace, an 18th-century work of enduring mastery with sprawling gardens, exquisite museums and photo-worthy arches. But several reels on Instagram show women searching for something—or someone—else within its premises: Padmanabh Singh.

When his sister, Gauravi Kumari, tells me that she actually forwards these reels to the family group chat, Padmanabh elbows her playfully. It was not very long ago that he was enlisting her help to sneak love letters to his girlfriends at Mayo College Girls’ School in Ajmer, where Gauravi was studying. “The boys were allowed to send letters to their sisters, and Dada sent me the same letter every Sunday: ‘Hi Peechu, what’s up?’ with a huge signature. His girlfriends, however, got long, multiple-page ones.”

Born just one year apart, they grew up like twins, albeit with wildly different personalities. Gauravi is the planner—the pseudo-mom. “I am always telling my brothers, ‘It’s late, please go home’, or ‘I’m leaving, but I think you should leave too’.” Padmanabh continues to befuddle his sister with his spontaneous travel plans and living-out-of-a-suitcase-for-months lifestyle.

I see glimpses of their bond while they shoot Vogue India’s July-August cover in Singapore, challenging each other to a competitive game of rummy at the Chinese bistro Maggie’s, cycling down Duxton Hill with the afternoon sun glinting off their Cartier jewellery and breaking into a round of rock-paper-scissors mid-shot. As the day unfolds, so do Gauravi Kumari and Padmanabh Singh, talking about what it was like growing up in a palace, what they look for in a partner and who is the better gift-giver.
