Director SS Rajamouli has revealed that Varanasi will find its emotional anchor in a deeply moving father-son relationship. This core dynamic will drive the narrative across its breathtaking canvas. The globe-trotting adventure, slated to release in theatres on April 7, 2027, is expected to be one of the biggest cinematic events of the year. While its scale is enormous, the makers believe the emotional core will be crucial in holding the narrative together. Prakash Raj plays Mahesh Babu’s father in the film.

Diverse backdrops, one emotion
In service of this emotional thread, the protagonist Rudra, played by Mahesh Babu, will travel through incredibly diverse landscapes. His journey takes him into the deep wilderness of Africa and across the icy expanses of Antarctica. Audiences will also witness unexpected fantasy elements woven into the narrative.
As revealed in the title announcement glimpse released last year, the story of the Mahesh Babu-Priyanka Chopra film spans multiple centuries. This expansive timeline incorporates devastating natural disasters alongside legendary figures from the Ramayana.

A spellbinding 30-minute episode
Writer Vijayendra Prasad, who also co-wrote Baahubali and RRR, recently spoke about a spectacular 30-minute sequence in the film. The episode depicts an epic battle between Lord Rama and the giant demon Kumbhakarna, played by Prithviraj Sukumaran. Vijayendra Prasad said the sequence left him completely spellbound.
Mahesh Babu reportedly underwent extensive look tests to capture the calm and commanding demeanour of Lord Rama. The battle is being designed as one of the film’s biggest highlights.
Varanasi is shaping up to be a standalone action-adventure rather than a multi-part franchise. The entire shoot is expected to wrap by the end of October this year. Rajamouli recently revealed that all major IMAX action sequences have already been completed. Extensive VFX work is currently underway. The film’s music is composed by MM Keeravani.
