Chennai: Averring that the people voted for the present government out of their desperation to see a transparent, honest and corruption-free rule in place, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay said that there should be zero tolerance by the authorities and the police on crimes against women and there should be no delay in the registration of FIR on POCSO cases.

Inaugurating the two-day annual conference of district collectors and police officers in Chennai on Monday, the Chief Minister said that since women’s safety was of utmost importance no change or compromise should be made in the special arrangements made for the protection of women and district collectors and superintendents of police should ensure that.

Since the safety of students and children was of prime importance, shops near schools should be closely monitored and even checked if needs to prevent the sale of narcotics and those indulging in the drug-related crimes should be taken to task immediately by getting them maximum punishment, he said.

Education would be a celebration only when successful students transcended caste differences and hence the authorities should ensure that it was achieved through their supervision, he said and wanted the officials to elimination of prejudices in all aspects of life, fair in their dealings and be humanistic in dealing with people who approach them with grievances.

Apart from supervising the implementation of people’s welfare schemes of the government, the authorities should cooperate with the district ministers and MLAs when they visit them for inspecting government offices, he said.

Government officials could work freely without fear within the framework of law because transparency should be the basic principle and they should approach sensitive issues like child marriages with a community outlook, he said.

Outlining the steps that should be taken to prevent illicit arrack distillation in hilly areas, he stressed on the need to conduct awareness camps in all the districts by the health department to fight narcotic use with a view to eliminating drug demand.

Enforcement and awareness building should be carried out in industrialised regions of the State like Chennai, Coimbatore and Tirupur, where migrant workers should be brought under the scanner to ensure that they were free of drug use, he said.

The Chief Minister wanted the authorities to give importance to prevent innocent people from falling prey to Ponzi schemes, implement regulatory measures in chemical and firecracker unit, reduce road accidents in the State had been ranked at No one in the country, save migrant workers from exploitation and attacks and treat people visiting police stations with dignity.
