Metallica has made an incredibly generous charitable donation to a struggling Welsh foodbank, donating £20,000 which equates to 9,000 meals for people in need

Metallica has donated £20,000 to a local Cardiff foodbank as they descend upon Principality Stadium in Wales over the weekend on their tour.

The legendary rock band performed on Sunday night as part of their M72 Tour, and decided to give back to the local community – in the form of 9,000 meals for the local foodbank.

Rachel Biggs, CEO of Cardiff Foodbank, told BBC Wales that she thought she was being pranked when she received the message from Metallica’s charitable foundation, All Within My Hands “We had an email saying ‘This isn’t a scam, please get in touch with the foundation’. They said ‘We are going to donate £20,000 to you’.”

Biggs added: “It’s an incredible amount of money which will make such a difference and replenish our empty shelves.”

She continued that the donation from Metallica was their “largest celebrity donation,” adding that their move has helped raise their profile and “what Metallica are doing is mobilising their fans, mobilising the local community.” Taylor Swift donated to the same foodbank on her Eras Tour in 2024 after her performances at the food stadium.

This donation came just weeks after the Cardiff foodbank made a desperate plea for donations. In a post on Facebook, the foodbank made the appeal: “We’re very worried. We have never seen our warehouse so empty, and now, for the first time ever, we’re out of crucial items – such as long-life fruit juices that make up our three-day emergency food parcels.”

The move from Metallica comes just a month after they urged fans to donate blood in support of their tour. In a very first, the NHS collaborated with the rock band ahead of it’s UK stint.

“Wherever we go on tour, we want to give something meaningful back to the communities that welcome us,” said a spokesperson for the heavy metal band.

“We’ve seen in the United States and Australia how working with blood services can help raise awareness of blood donation and support patients, and we’re excited to bring that same approach to the UK.”

The band played across the UK in June at Glasgow’s Hampden Park and the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, and is set to perform two dates at the London Stadium in early July.

“As we close out the European leg of the M72 World Tour in the UK, we’re asking fans to step up and be part of something bigger than the show,” the band’s spokesperson added.

“Looking out for one another and supporting those who rely on donated blood every day is a simple act that can make a powerful difference.”

Alan Prosser, a spokesman for the Welsh Blood Service, commented on the importance of the collaboration at the time: “This is a truly unique moment for blood donation across the UK. Partnering with a band of Metallica’s global reach allows us to connect with new audiences and shine a spotlight on the ongoing need for blood.”
