Hyderabad:Director-General of Police C.V. Anand on Tuesday emphasised personnel welfare, training and transparent administration, with special focus on drug abuse, online betting and mental well‑being, during a review of Telangana Special Battalions (TGSP) at their headquarters in Jubilee Hills.

Anand inspected administrative wings, communication systems, armoury, technical units and infrastructure before reviewing presentations by senior officers. He directed officials to expedite filling of vacancies, strengthen technology, augment vehicles, improve residential quarters and ensure better healthcare and welfare facilities.

Recalling the role of the erstwhile APSP Battalions during the peak of left wing extremism, Anand said they stood shoulder‑to‑shoulder with civil police in anti‑Naxal operations. He cited his own experience in Nizamabad and Warangal, noting the courage of personnel in protecting stations and supporting operations under difficult conditions.

Following Telangana’s formation, 13 Special Battalions were established, now performing critical duties during elections, festivals, VIP bandobust, disaster management and emergency response. Anand appreciated their services during recent heavy rains in Nizamabad and Kamareddy, where they rescued people and protected property.

He stressed that commandants must ensure discipline while remaining sensitive to personnel’s family, health and education issues. Officers should adopt a humane approach to address emotional stress faced by those deployed in distant locations. Duty allocation, he said, must be transparent and impartial.

Highlighting mental health, Anand urged effective use of ‘Mitra’ Counselling Centres, continuous awareness programmes against drug abuse and online betting, and early intervention to prevent suicides. He called for regular training in technology, weapon handling, disaster management, communication, fitness and resilience, adding that modernisation, discipline and welfare would enable the force to meet future policing challenges.
