Former EastEnders actress Lisa Faulker met her husband John Torode while starring as a contestant on Celebrity MasterChef and their friendship blossomed into romance

Lisa Faulker met husband John Torode while competing as a contestant on Celebrity MasterChef.

The former EastEnders actress was crowned winner of the BBC cookery show back in 2010 and initially formed a friendship with the judge before romance blossomed between the pair.

On Thursday (July 2), Lisa shared with fans that she’s undergone surgery after being diagnosed with the early stages of breast cancer. The TV personality explained that she had the procedure two weeks ago and has since had the all clear from her doctors.

She added that still needs to undergo radiotherapy, but reassured her followers on Instagram that she is feeling better. Lisa previously discussed her family life with John during an interview with the Express in 2022.

Since meeting on MasterChef and becoming a couple, the duo tied the knot in 2019 and have also partnered up on screen to co-host John and Lisa’s Weekend Kitchen, which debuted on ITV seven years ago.

When questioned whether she realised what a transformative experience Celebrity Masterchef would prove to be back in 2010, Lisa confirmed she had no inkling.

“No, I had absolutely no idea,” she reflected at the time. “I had no idea it was going to change my career. So much that I was then going to start cooking and then, you know, John and I being together. It’s just so weird how the world works!”.

Beyond her life as a television chef, Lisa remains an active actress, and is most recognised for her parts in soaps including Brookside, Holby City and EastEnders.

Discussing her shift from acting to television cooking, Lisa revealed: “I’m very lucky to do both, and recently I’ve been doing some more acting as well.

“But I think we live in a world where – years and years ago, you only had one career and you didn’t stray off the path – but you can’t just have that one career anymore.

“Life doesn’t work like that – especially not as a 50-year-old woman in the acting game. There’s not lots of work and so I’ve actually been very lucky in that I love to cook, I really love it.”

“So, after Masterchef I decided – and I was offered some great parts but they weren’t hugely different to what I’d done – so I just thought, you know what, I’m just going to jump in and test myself and do something that scares me.

“It’s been so brilliant and I’ve loved it, but I also love being on set, so I hope I can continue doing both until I’m an old lady.”

Later in the chat, Lisa spoke candidly about her domestic life with John and their blended family – revealing how sitting down together at the dinner table often proved the most effective way to have some “proper conversation” with their teenage kids.

Lisa is mum to adopted daughter Billie, while John has children Casper and Marselle from his first marriage, as well as Jonah and Lulu from another relationship.
