Worst Neighbor Ever follows four different stories of destructive and deadly neighbors across the United States. What happened to Shawna Scott after Frances Zaayer attacked her?
Shawna was being a good friend when she allowed Frances to move in with her. However, little did she know it would be a mistake she would regret for the rest of her life. Frances’ behaviour was extremely controlling and disruptive, which led Shawna and her husband, Dave, to ask her to leave. Nonetheless, Frances instead moved across the street and started alleging that the couple was stalking and harassing her.
However, hell broke loose in 2018, when she entered the Scott residence and shot Shawna and Dave, killing the latter. While Shawna survived the attack, she suffered terrible injuries resulting in 16 facial surgeries. Today, she lives a quiet life, sharing a close bond with her daughter and her two grandchildren.
Where is Mark Leonard after destroying 33 homes?
Another story covered in the Netflix series is from a 2012 house explosion case in Indiana. The blast was caused by Mark Leonard and Monserrate “Moncy” Shirley, in hopes of collecting the latter’s USD 300,000 insurance. They filled the house with natural gas and used a microwave to ignite it. However, the explosion didn’t just destroy one but 33 homes, causing millions of dollars in damage, injuring several people and killing their neighbor, John ‘Dion’ Longworth and Jennifer Longworth.
Mark Leonard was found guilty of 53 counts and convicted of felony murder and arson, and received two life sentences plus 75 years. Moncy Shirley pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit arson and was sentenced to 50 years in prison. According to reports, Mark died in prison of natural causes in 2018.
How did police negligence cause Miles Armstead’s death?
Episode 3 of the series followed Miles and Melina Armstead. The couple had just moved to a new home in East Oakland. However, they soon became the target of their neighbour, Jamal Thomas (JT). As his behaviour became more erratic, the Armsteads filed for a restraining order. But that only escalated JT’s antics to the point of causing damage to their home. The couple reported repeated police delays and ineffective intervention and eventually decided to move. Nonetheless, when Miles came back to prepare the house for sale on May 1, 2020, JT entered the property and fatally shot him.
JT was convicted of first-degree murder and, in 2025, was sentenced to 28.8 years to life in prison. The Armsteads were not satisfied and filed a complaint against the city of Oakland for negligence and for not taking the family’s pleas seriously, complaining that they were “undertstaffed and overworked”. The family settled in 2023 and was awarded USD 2.4 million.
Caroline Herring and the multimillion-dollar fraud
The final chapter in the series followed Caroline Herrling, who ran a multimillion-dollar fraud targeting 71-year-old Charles Wilding, a reclusive homeowner in Sherman Oaks. She and her associates sought to gain control of Charles’ property by forging legal documents and falsely claiming authority over it. However, things took a turn when Charles was reported missing by his neighbours in 2021. But it was revealed that he died in 2020. Soon it was uncovered that Caroline and her accomplices hid the crime by moving, dismembering and disposing of Charles’ body after a failed attempt to dissolve the remains with chemicals.
While Charles’ neighbours’ report led police to investigate his disappearance, his body or whatever was left of it was never recovered. In 2024, Caroline pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and was sentenced to 20 years in prison and ordered to pay USD 3.8 million in restitution to the victims. Prosecutors stated that she exploited vulnerable older adults and caused significant financial and emotional harm.
