NELLORE: The ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Andhra Pradesh is facing a significant challenge vis-a-vis voter verification in Udayagiri Assembly segment, as several locals live outside the constituency for employment and other purposes.

A notable instance emerged from Vijayanagaram village in Jaladanki mandal. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) visiting the area to verify the credentials of 70 registered voters, found most houses locked and only a few residents present. The village looked mostly abandoned.

Subsequent verifications revealed that the locals largely migrated to Kavali, Bogole and nearby towns for purposes of employment and their children’s education. Revenue officials confirmed that the families return to the village during the agricultural season to cultivate their lands. The seasonal migration pattern has been reported to higher authorities as part of the SIR exercise.

The issue reflects a broader trend in Udayagiri constituency. According to MLA Kakarla Suresh, around 15 to 20 per cent of the constituency’s population migrates to Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in search of employment. Most of them work as masons and daily wage labourers because of limited local job opportunities.

“They make it a point to return for festivals and family functions,” the MLA said.

Many persons from Nellore district have also temporarily settled in Telangana’s Jagtial district, where they are employed in the construction sector while maintaining links with their native villages.

Before the SIR exercise, Udayagiri constituency had around 2.32 lakh voters. Officials expect the revision to provide a clearer picture of permanent residents and migrant voters who are stationed elsewhere for work.
