Suicide attempt in front of Aspari Police Station alleging harassment by CI
Tension prevailed at the Aspari Police Station in Alur constituency of Kurnool district after a man allegedly attempted suicide in front of the station. His family accused that police harassment is behind the extreme step.
The victim Golla Hanumantha Reddy of Billekallu village in Aspari mandal reportedly consumed pesticide outside the police station, unable to bear the alleged harassment by police. Police immediately shifted to a government hospital and later referred to the Adoni Government Area Hospital for better treatment.
Doctors have stated that Hanumantha Reddy’s condition is critical.
Following the incident, the victim’s family members and locals staged a protest in front of the police station, leading to a tense situation for some time.
According to the victim’s brother, Golla Ramireddy, Hanumantha Reddy is working as a clerk in the Aspari Cooperative Society. He had been suspended recently over allegations related to loan recoveries.
Ramireddy alleged that despite Hanumantha Reddy not being present in the village during a clash between Valmiki and Ediga communities in Billekallu, the police repeatedly summoned Hanumantha Reddy for inquiry.
Family members further alleged that circle inspector K. Srinivasa Nayak subjected him to severe harassment, including illegal detention at police quarters and physical assault during questioning at the police station.
Unable to bear the alleged harassment, Hanumantha Reddy attempted suicide by consuming pesticide in front of the station. After he lost consciousness, police shifted him to a nearby government hospital, which later referred him to Adoni Government Area Hospital for advanced treatment.
The Aspari CI denied the charges and said, “He is trying to blackmail us to escape from the case. We have never assaulted him.”
