After months of anticipation, Mammootty’s next collaboration with director Nithish Sahadev has officially gone on floors. The film was launched with a traditional pooja ceremony in Kochi on Thursday, marking the beginning of production for one of Malayalam cinema’s most eagerly awaited projects. The film is being produced under the banner of Mammootty Kampany, with Jimshi Khalid serving as cinematographer.
The project was first announced in February 2025 but has taken its time reaching the production stage. Now that cameras have finally started rolling, excitement is building around what promises to be a commercial entertainer featuring Mammootty in a role unlike his recent outings.
The screenplay has been co-written by Nithish Sahadev and Anuraj OB, who previously penned Antony Varghese’s 2022 film Oh Meri Laila. While the makers are yet to reveal details about the supporting cast or release plans, the film’s premise has already generated considerable curiosity.
In an earlier conversation with us, Nithish described the project as an action entertainer centred on a local gangster. He also revealed that Mammootty will be attempting the distinctive Malayalam spoken in the Marthandam and Nagercoil region, an aspect expected to lend greater authenticity to the character. For Nithish, the project marks another major milestone in a career that has gathered impressive momentum. The filmmaker made his directorial debut with the acclaimed family drama Falimy, starring Basil Joseph. Earlier this year, he made his Tamil debut with Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil. The Jiiva starrer political satire emerged as a box office success, signalling a much-needed comeback for the actor.
The new venture also continues Mammootty Kampany’s reputation for backing films that combine commercial storytelling with fresh voices. Over the past few years, the banner has played a key role in expanding Mammootty’s already diverse body of work.
Meanwhile, Mammootty has an enviable lineup of projects ahead. He is currently working on Om: Chapter 1, the upcoming Tamil film headlined by Dhanush and directed by Amaran filmmaker Rajkumar Periasamy. The recently announced ensemble also includes veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah.
The actor has also completed shooting for Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Padayatra, marking another collaboration with the legendary filmmaker. In addition, we hear that Mammootty is set to headline and produce a new film directed by Shibin Murukesh, who previously worked as an associate director under Premalu director Girish AD.
